James Cameron and Mary Peattie

What happened to James Cameron and Mary Peattie

It is highly likely we will never know what happened between James Cameron and Mary Peattie. There is much speculation about the couple but no source information. One popular genealogy website1 has countless family trees featuring the couple. Here is what we learn:

Mary Peattie

James Cameron

The Family Search2 records tell a different story regarding Mary Peattie which can be verified by searching for her on Scotlands People. It is possible we can weave a story from the historical records. The records are as follows:

Children born to Mary Peattie and James Cameron in Kilconquhar, Fife
  1. Mary Gotten Cameron - October 1, 1755, was born in fornication.
Family Search lists one record for James Cameron, father of Mary Cameron: he was born March 19, 1719, in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. His parents were Archibald and Katherine Cameron. His siblings were: Daniel, Duncan, and Archibald. Dunfermline, Fife is 51 km away from Kilconquhar, Fife.

The issues are:
  1. Whether there were two Mary Peatties?
  2. Whether Mary Peattie, wife of Andrew Malcolm, was the mother of Mary Cameron?
Mary Peattie had three brothers born between 1721 and 1732. Children born to the Peattie men would have been too young to have formed a relationship with James Cameron. The records are silent regarding whether there were two Mary Peatties and what happened to James Cameron. What lies before us merely leads to an ambiguous conclusion:

Mary Peattie was married to Andrew Malcolm when she committed "fornication" with James Cameron. Mary and Andrew did not separate and had three more children. Mary died at the age of forty in the village of  Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland.

CONCLUSION: It can be confidently stated: Mary Peattie and James Cameron were not the parents of Mary Cameron of Three Rivers, Quebec.
